Gifts of Imperfection

Brené Brown is a social researcher and has been much admired in our home for a while.  Since watching her TED talks on The Power of Vulnerability and Listening to Shame a few years ago, she has been a favourite.

When I heard that she was doing an eCourse on The Gifts of Imperfection, I pretty-much knew I would have to sign up.

The course started on Sunday and I have enjoyed the first few days immensely.  It is not necessary to be artistic, although I have decided to use the opportunity to stretch myself in that area.

Late registrations will still be taken up until tomorrow, so if you like to join in its not too late. Watch out for some of my imperfect-but-that’s-ok updates on Instagram

My Favourite Colour Must Be…

I just couldn’t help myself.  Despite a massive clean-out campaign that’s happening at home, when I saw this perfect mini cup and saucer at The Kloof SPCA’s Memory Lane, I knew that it would feel right at home with me. And so, since last week, it has taken up residence on my mantle piece.

If you asked me what my favourite colour is, I could not commit myself to one.  I am passionate about orange, love the restful beauty of beige, the crisp freshness of yellow and the exotic allure of jade, the wonder of white, the drama of black …

I never set out to be a red person, but a lovely lady at a local coffee shop gave me some insight into myself the other day.  I arrived at the counter to pay, wearing a red T-shirt and a red floral scarf.  I was carrying my handbag of the moment, which happens to be red.  I took out my lovely red and white polka dot leather wallet.  When my cellphone notified me that I had made a credit card payment, I took it out to silence it.  She noticed that it had a red cover, and she asked me if I always colour co-ordinated my days.  No I didn’t.  I told her I guess my heart was true to red, and we had a good chuckle.
In fact I was still smiling as I got into my red car and drove home.

Happy Stitching!

Tickled…

I have grown quite passsionate about paper – in particular book paper.  I have learnt that each page has a grain, some pages are firm and flexible, while others are fragile and brittle and I am fascinated by the way books age from white to deep cream.

We have started to dye book paper with red ink.  These variations in colour have made such beautiful results.  Same ink bath – different book pages- many delightful shades 🙂

We have made some large proteas from this paper and are busy with a batch of pink buttonhole proteas  at the moment too!

Freshly Found is definitely in the Pink!

Heart Leaf Heart

Every year, when the trees are finished using their leaves, they throw piles of them onto the grass in our garden, I like to pick some of them up and use them again!
This year I made some goodies for friends.
I cut heart shapes out of the leaves, before pressing them under a pile of books.
In this momento, I layered 3 pressed leaves, with a heart shape cut out of the top one only, and the rich rust-red leaf in the middle showing through.  I used a little wood glue to keep everything together and tied it with a ribbon.
I attached a handwritten tag and gave it to a friend for her birthday.  She invited us to breakfast, and specifically asked for no gifts, just a message from each of us.
I made this wedding card for other friends.  The background was a watercolour print I found in a book waiting to be recycled.
I wood-glued the leaves into position and layered it onto the front of a card.  What a wonderful wedding it was, with a wonderful story.

Vintage Finery

It’s been so much fun – sourcing, decorating and repairing vintage clothes for the i-love pop-up-shop at the Galleria.  I love the creative variety of challenges and delivered another huge batch today.

I am always delighted to have an excuse to crochet!  These coloured straps replaced faulty ones on this bright stripe dress top

And if this red coat had been my size, it would definitely have stayed right here – at home with me!
